Containers & Planters Buying Guide

Container Size Matters

Plant root systems need adequate space. As a general rule, use containers that are at least 6-12 inches deep for herbs, 12-18 inches for vegetables, and 18+ inches for shrubs and large plants.

Material Considerations

  • Terracotta: Breathable, attractive, but heavy and can crack in cold
  • Plastic: Lightweight, affordable, retains moisture well
  • Fabric: Excellent drainage, prevents root circling, breathable
  • Ceramic: Beautiful appearance, heavier, moderate drainage
  • Composite: Durable, weather-resistant, long-lasting

Drainage is Critical

Every container must have drainage holes. Poor drainage leads to root rot and plant failure. If using a decorative pot without holes, place a draining pot inside it.
